Toyah Willcox turns 53 today and she’s looking as fine as ever.
Best known for her over-the-top hair and facial art, Toyah was an icon of the eighties with numerous hits such as ‘I Want To Be Free’, ‘Thunder In The Mountains’ and ‘It’s A Mystery’.
She is known to hard-core fans for many other classics like ‘Ieya’, ‘Danced’, ‘War Boys’ and ‘Insects’ to name a few.
To me, she holds the honour of being the first act I ever saw live back in 1981. That was a night I’ll never forget – the energy that came from the stage that night was only just outweighed by the energy from the audience. I’ve been fortunate to have seen her many times since and have yet to be disappointed.
Far from fading away into obscurity, Toyah has continued to write and record music, albeit not so prolifically. She is currently touring with her band playing those classic tracks for which many fans remember her – I’ll be at Leicester Square come June 17th and am very much looking forward to it.
She has a new album due out some time this year with her new band ‘The Humans’. “Sugar Rush” is the title and it promises to be something special if the released track ‘Sea of Size’ is anything to go by.
