Iron Maiden gigs

I’ve been lucky enough to see Iron Maiden on most of the tours since 1986.  Below is a list of the concerts, along with pics of the tickets (where they survived!) and a set list.

1. Hammersmith Odeon, London, 8 November 1986

Memories of this gig are the inflatable hands on either side of the stage and the Nicko rising in the air as Eddie’s head rose up from the back of the stage; and the big inflatable ball with an Eddie figure inside.

Best songs that I remember: Rime, Heaven, Hallowed (my all-time favourite song, EVER!), Iron Maiden and Sanctuary.

Best songs: The Prisoner, Die With Your Boots On, Killers, Seventh Son, Hallowed (it’s gonna be on all these!).

3. Wembley Arena, London, 17 December 1990

Best songs: All of them! Truly this must be one of the best Maiden gigs ever!

5. Brixton Academy, London, 10 November 1995

Ah, the Blaze Bayley era.  I was one of the lucky fan club members that got to hear The X-Factor at a special event and Man On The Edge stood out (although we all called it “Falling Down” cos we didn’t know the track titles!).  Blaze had his critics but I always thought he was not too bad.

This tour went by the moniker of “The X-Factour”!

Maiden tix 1995

1. Intro
2. Man On The Edge
3. Wrathchild
4. Heaven Can Wait
5. Lord Of The Flies
6. Fortunes Of War

16. Iron Maiden

Encores:
17. The Number Of The Beast
18. Hallowed Be Thy Name

Memories: My first time at Brixton Academy. I prefer these smaller venues because it doesn’t matter where you are, you get a decent view of the band.

Best songs: Man On The Edge, Lord Of The Flies, Sign Of The Cross, The Edge Of Darkness. Although I like Blaze, I wasn’t impressed with his renditions of the older songs.

6. Brixton Academy, London, 16 May 1998

The original tickets got lost in the post, which is why I have a scan of a duplicate that I picked up from the door on the night of the gig.

This was part of the “Virtual XI World Tour”

Maiden tix 1998

Set list:

1. Intro: Theme from “Romeo And Juliet”

16. Hallowed Be Thy Name
17. The Evil That Men Do
18. The Clairvoyant
19. Fear Of The Dark
20. Iron Maiden

Encores:
21. The Number Of The Beast
22. The Trooper
23. Sanctuary

Memories: Queuing around the block for over an hour and then finding out that I could’ve gone straight to the desk to get my tickets ahead of everyone else! Oops!  Also, buying the Maiden XI football shirt!  Final memory was seeing the support band, Dirty Deeds – my best buddy went and I can remember we just turned to each other with a look of like “these guys are good”.  Whatever happened to them because they’ve come the closest to playing Maiden off the stage.

Best songs: Futureal, Angel, Clansman, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Sign of the Cross

7. Civic Centre, Portsmouth, 26 October 1998

The second gig of the Virtual XI World Tour that I got to see was at another small venue – in fact it was smaller than Brixton!

The set list was the same so I won’t repeat it.

Memories: the pub before the gig; losing my voice from singing along so much and the support band coming on stage in kilts doing a highland fling (kind of!) and proceeding to “pie” Maiden. Hilarious.

Best songs:  As above, with the addition of all the encores … just because!

8. Omnisport de Bercy, Paris, 9 September 1999

9 September 1999 was supposed to have been one of the dates that the dreaded Y2K virus was going to cause chaos in all things technological.  That’s why they chose the date.  The first gig as a six-piece – and what a gig!  I have still got the ticket stub in case your wondering; it’s just that I wanted to preserve it so I decided to laminate it.  Bad idea.  Suffice to say I have a blackened ticket! Ho-hum!

This was the start of the  “Ed Hunter World Tour”

Set list:

1. Intro: Heartbeat / Transylvania / Churchill’s Speech
2. Aces High
3. Wrathchild
4. The Trooper
5. 2 Minutes to Midnight
6. The Clansman
7. Wasted Years
8. Killers
9. Futureal
10. Man on the Edge
11. Powerslave
12. The Phantom of the Opera
13. The Evil That Men Do
14. Fear of the Dark
15. Iron Maiden

Encores:
16. The Number of the Beast
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name
18. Run to the Hills

Memories: the coach trip to Paris and back, Megadeth supporting …. yes, supporting!  Couldn’t believe that!  The sound of Maiden as a six-piece just blew me away.  It was awesome and to this day is number one on my list of “best concerts”.

Best songs: it has to be another “all of them”.

9. Earls Court, London, 16 June 2000

The “Brave New World Tour” promoting the first album with the new-look six-piece band.

Maiden tix 2000 (June)

Set list:

1. Intro: Theme from “First Knight”
2. The Wicker Man
3. Ghost Of The Navigator
4. Brave New World
5. Wrathchild
6. 2 Minutes To Midnight
7. Blood Brothers
8. Sign Of The Cross
9. The Mercenary

13. The Evil That Men Do
14. Fear Of The Dark
15. Iron Maiden

Encores:
16. Number Of The Beast
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name
18. Sanctuary

Memories: disappointment at being back in a large arena soon disappeared with the first strains of the intro track; Bruce’s rendition of “Sign of the Cross” showing me that maybe Blaze really wasn’t that good live  (at least in Maiden); parked in Hammersmith and walked to the venue (20 minutes – not bad!) note: remember this because it becomes more relevant in a minute!

Best songs: Wicker Man, 2 Minutes, Blood Brothers, Sign of the Cross, The Trooper, Fear, Hallowed and NOB

10. NEC Arena, Birmingham, 4 November 2000

Maiden tix 2000 (Nov)

Another tour that I managed to get to see them twice!   Again they played the same setlist.

Memories: driving up to Birmingham from Reading in less than an hour-and-half!! Thinking how rubbish Rob Halford sounded, then realising it was actually the venue because Maiden didn’t sound that brilliant either!  Most disappointing Maiden gig for me.

11. Earls Court, London, 12 December 2003

The “Dance of Death World Tour”.

Maiden tix 2003

Set list:

1. Intro
2. The Wildest Dreams
3. Wrathchild

9. Paschendale
10. Lord Of The Flies
11. No More Lies
12. Hallowed Be Thy Name
13. Fear Of The Dark
14. Iron Maiden

Encores:
15. Journeyman
16. The Number Of The Beast
17. Run To The Hills

Memories: parking in Kensington because Hammersmith had become a private car park! Got the tube to Earl’s Court; seeing the film crew that we later found out were filming for the new DVD (we never made the cut!); feeling very old because I had to leave the main arena when my ears started ringing really badly 😦  !  Then finding the police were restricting access to the tube so we decided to walk back to Kensington – we got drenched in a downpour about half-way!

Best songs: Wrathchild, Madness, Trooper, Paschendale (brilliant choice of poem for the intro – talk about shivers down your spine!), Hallowed, Fear, Iron Maiden and NOB.

And there we have it.  My journey around (bits of) the country – but mainly London! – with Iron Maiden.
